生長因子多為廣義的肽激素，有胰島素、表皮生長因子（EGF）、成纖細胞生長因子（fibroblast growth factor，FGF）、血小板來源增殖因子（platelet－derived growth factor，PDGF）以及生長激素釋放抑制因子（somatostatin=SRIH）等。在肽激素之外，皮質醇和甲狀腺素（T3）等也屬于生長因子。在這些物質中，已知激素之外的物質可作為培養(yǎng)細胞生長因素已被發(fā)現，但推測也是活體的發(fā)育因子。所以認為組織培養(yǎng)是探索活體發(fā)育因子的良好的實驗手段。簡而言之，微生物生命活動*，而微生物自身又不能合成的微量有機物質都可稱為生長因子。
